PBS KIDS' online games now available in Spanish!

Monday, September 16, 2013

I was sent the following information to share with my readers on behalf of PBS Kids! These are great tools to help our children learn a 2nd language at a earlier age. My biggest regret is not getting to learn Spanish until the 8th grade. Even now I am not very good at it. Lets not make the same mistake with our kids!

¡Buenas noticias! PBS KIDS is excited to announce more than 25 PBS KIDS games are now available in Spanish.  Join the Cat in the Hat, Curious George and Sid the Science Kid for fun games and stickers en espaƱol.

Kids can play games in Spanish from their favorite shows; the games from each series are grouped into collections that are all linked by a common theme and math curriculum. The collections of games now in Spanish include:

Curious George - Busy Day (16 games)
Join George on his very busy day as he learns about numbers and counting and is introduced to addition and subtraction.

Sid the Science Kid - Sid’s Super Fab Lab: Science Fair (9 games)
Check out the science fair displays with Sid and his friends, and play games that involve
measuring (temperature, weight, and size), sorting, symmetry, addition, and finding patterns.

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! - Cat’s Math Safari (2 games)
Help the Cat in the Hat collect the missing pages of his Animal Safari Book. You’ll have to use shape recognition and spatial skills, counting, and measurement.

The games are all enhanced with researched-based improvements to level selection and instructions. For ESL students or children learning Spanish, kids will learn math skills that will benefit them not only at home, but also in the classroom.  The games are part of the Ready To Learn Initiative, an early learning project of PBS KIDS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), funded by the U.S. Department of Education to support the development of early math and literacy skills in children ages 2-8, especially those from low-income families.

You can check out all of PBS KIDS online games in Spanish at pbskids.org/games/spanish.html.  Additional games in Spanish are also available there, including Spanish language-learning games from web-original series Oh Noah!

Arlington, Va. – March 7, 2013 – PBS Distribution announced it will be releasing two episodes of PBS KIDS’ popular WILD KRATTS series on the new DVD “RAINFOREST RESCUE.” Join brothers and wildlife explorers Martin and Chris Kratt (creators of the award-winning “Kratts’ Creatures” and Emmy-winning “Zoboomafoo”) as they embark on two creature-filled rainforest romps. The two engaging and fun episodes featured on this DVD are detailed below.

WILD KRATTS Creature Math App for iPad - $1.99

PBS KIDS Launches New WILD KRATTS Creature Math App for iPad

Educational app debuts on the heels of successful WILD KRATTS January special, which reached over 1.3 million kids ages 2-8

Arlington, VA, February 14, 2013 – PBS KIDS has launched WILD KRATTS Creature Math, the newest app from the popular WILD KRATTS series. Available exclusively for iPad, Creature Math offers a new way for fans to learn math skills while exploring creature powers with WILD KRATTS creators and stars Chris and Martin Kratt. Produced by Kratt Brothers Company, the Creature Math App allows users to practice basic math skills, like addition and subtraction, as they create their very own animal habitats. Players also learn valuable science concepts as they build homes and plant food items for the eight different animals featured in the game.

The latest iOS app from WILD KRATTS, Creature Math adjusts automatically as players’ skill levels increase and introduces interesting facts about animals as players build up to four unique wildlife habitats. Children are challenged to manage the habitats in a way that helps the animals and habitats thrive. The WILD KRATTS Creature Math App is part of the Ready To Learn Initiative, an early learning project of PBS KIDS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

“Just as real-life zoologists Chris and Martin Kratt transform into animated versions of themselves and visit wild animal habitats on WILD KRATTS, the new app brings users on their own creature adventures,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Programming, PBS. “Creature Math allows kids to explore math skills at their own pace, by diving into the habitats of animals ranging from peregrine falcons to bullfrogs.”

WILD KRATTS Creature Math debuts on the heels of last month’s science special WILD KRATTS “Lost at Sea,” which brought millions of kids on an underwater adventure with the Kratt brothers. Nearly 1.3 million kids (ages 2-8) and over 1.6 million households tuned in for this hour-long underwater-themed special, produced by Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Entertainment.* WILD KRATTS also attracted the most unique visitors and was the top visited program site on pbskids.org in January (Google Analytics, January 2013). The series was the top streamed PBS KIDS program in January with a total of 26.6 million streams online and on mobile (Google Analytics, January 2013).

PBS KIDS is increasingly serving kids where they live, learn and play – helping to make anytime a learning time on mobile devices, on-air, online and beyond. PBS KIDS has more than 25 educational apps available, including the recently released WILD KRATTS Creature Power App, that are designed to help kids build literacy, math, science and school readiness skills. More information about PBS KIDS’ apps is available on pbskids.org/mobile.

“Today, millions of American children, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, start school without basic math and literacy skills, dimming their chances for a bright future,” said Debra Sanchez, Senior Vice President, Education and Children's Content at CPB. “Through trusted and effective public media content, such as the WILD KRATTS Creature Math App and other programs and online games developed as part of Ready To Learn, CPB and PBS are helping to narrow the achievement gap by giving all children access to high quality tools that will help prepare them for academic success.”

The WILD KRATTS Creature Math App will be made available for free to families in low-income communities through the PBS KIDS Mobile Learning Program, a national outreach program launched last year.  As part of the program, PBS and CPB are collaborating with Head Start centers and local PBS stations nationwide to distribute free app download codes, so that educators and families can better support children’s learning in Head Start centers, Title I schools and other community-based organizations in low-income neighborhoods.  Educators and families in these communities will also be able to obtain codes for use on their professional or at-home devices.

The WILD KRATTS Creature Math App is also available for $1.99 from the App Store on iPad or at www.AppStore.com/WildKrattsCreatureMath.

PBS Kids: Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!

Monday, February 11, 2013

Two new episodes and an online game debut on March 1 in commemoration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday week

Arlington, VA, February 11, 2013 – It’s Dr. Seuss’ 109th birthday on March 2, and PBS KIDS is celebrating with new content on-air, online and on mobile beginning March 1. Viewers can join everyone’s favorite cat in two new episodes of THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! as the Cat, Nick and Sally explore science concepts from as far away as space and as close as inside our own bodies. Kids will also be able to continue the science adventure with the new “Swirly Whirly Pearl Hunt” online game and video content online and on mobile.

“Every year at this time, children and families across the country pay tribute to Dr. Seuss and his legacy, and we’re thrilled to participate in the festivities with new content across platforms,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Programming, PBS. “PBS KIDS is proud to offer two new episodes of THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! and a new online game that will take kids on science adventures that range from the solar system to the skeletal system, helping teach key concepts and encouraging their curiosity and thirst for learning.”

THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! will feature two brand new episodes. “Rumbly Tumbly / Planet Name Game” features a super shrunken trip into Thing One's stomach as well as a whirlwind trip to each of the eight planets, and “Top of the Sky / Jiggle Bones” follows the Cat, Nick and Sally as they travel to Audrey the Astronaut’s space station and visit Dr. Giggles to see why bones are important.

The celebration will continue online and on mobile. Video clips from both episodes will be available for free online at pbskids.org/video and on the PBS KIDS Video App starting March 1.

Viewers will also have a chance to interact with the Cat in the Hat with the new “Swirly Whirly Pearl Hunt” game. In this game, the Swirly Whirly Ocean is filled with aquatic creatures of all colors, shapes and sizes, and players can catch a ride on the Thinga-ma-jigger to travel deeper and deeper through silly, Seussian schools of fish. The Swirly Whirly Pearl is waiting somewhere far below, along with the chance to create a personalized school of mix-and-match sea creatures. “Swirly Whirly Pearl Hunt” will be available on pbskids.org/catinthehat on March 1.

Following is a listing of THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! episodes premiering March 1

“Rumbly Tumbly / Planet Name Game”
“Rumbly Tumbly”
Nick's hungry tummy is rumbling! But why do our stomachs make noises when they're hungry? A super shrunken trip into Thing One's stomach will show them the answer! They learn how chewing and stomach juices help to break down the food, and the tummy sounds are actually the stomach working. When your tummy is empty, the sounds are much louder! There's only one way to quiet Nick's rumbly tumbly… a chewy chocolate chunky chunk chip cookie!

“Planet Name Game”
Nick and Sally have run out of things to name in the garden. Good thing Cat needs help putting his model of the solar system back together – they can help him name the planets! Off in the Space-a-ma-racer they go on a whirlwind trip around the universe, learning the names of the eight planets as they go.

“Top of the Sky / Jiggle Bones”
“Top of the Sky”
Sally, Nick and Cat are playing with their toy rocket. Using the Cat's "Whoa-Look-At-It-Go-Launcher," he shoots the rocket up, up, and up! But now they need to go find it. Off to the top of the sky! They keep going higher until they're in space! They meet Audrey the Astronaut who explains that there is no top to the sky. The sky turns into space and space goes on forever!  Just when the kids think their rocket is lost, they find it in Audrey's space station. Though they can't launch their rocket to the top of the sky, launching it to the moon is just as cool!

“Jiggle Bones”
Nick and Sally are wiggling and jiggling like the jelly mold in front of them. But they can't quite wiggle the same way. How come?  “Bones of course!” announces the Cat. Bones keep their bodies from being wiggly and jiggly. But why do they need bones? A visit to Dr. Giggles will answer that question! They learn about the big strong bones that help us stand and walk, the small bones that help us bend and move, and the all important bones that help protect our squishy bits! Even though they won't let you wiggle and jiggle like jelly, bones are important!

About THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT!
THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! was created in response to recent findings that children graduating from kindergarten are less prepared to learn about science than about other subjects. The series supports young children’s science learning by introducing scientific inquiry skills, teaching core science concepts and vocabulary, and preparing preschoolers for kindergarten and first grade science curriculum — all in whimsical style.

A team of science and early childhood experts developed the curriculum for the first season’s 40 episodes, each of which begins with a question posed by Sally or Nick. Although the Cat knows a lot of things, his insatiable curiosity to learn more about the world leads to adventures with Sally and Nick in his one-of-a-kind Thinga-ma-jigger, a marvelously Seuss-ian contraption that sprouts wings, pontoons, booster rockets, skis, and just about anything else needed to find the answer. The inquisitive gang travels to the bottom of the sea to observe giant sea worms, zips to the rain forest to visit animals living in Kapok trees, and shrinks to bee-size to visit a hive and learn how honey is made. Guided by the Cat, the kids figure things out by observing, collecting and managing clues, making connections, constructing and evaluating theories, and having discussions – all in a preschool-appropriate manner. Produced by Portfolio Entertainment Inc. and Collingwood O’Hare Productions, in association with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, Random House Children’s Entertainment, Treehouse, and PBS KIDS, THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! is based on Random House’s best selling Beginner Book collection, “The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library.”
