Saturday, December 13, 2014

It's that time of year, when your favorite PBS Kids programming airs their special holiday episodes. So get those DVRs set, so when your kids are off during the holidays they can watch these episodes again and again!

Holiday Program Descriptions

CURIOUS GEORGE
“CURIOUS GEORGE: A Very Monkey Christmas” – airs December 17 and 25
Join George and The Man with the Yellow Hat as they count down the days until Christmas. There’s only one puzzle: neither of them can figure out what to give the other for a present. The Man is having trouble reading George’s wish list and George doesn’t have a clue about what to get for the Man who has everything. Maybe you can help!

PEG + CAT
“PEG + CAT + HOLIDAYS” – one-hour special premieres December 17
“The Hanukkah Problem” - When Albert Einstein invites Peg and Cat over for Hanukkah, he shows them how to make a 2D piece of paper into a 3D dreidel. Later, they need to use this process to bring peace to Al’s home and save his Hanukkah.

“The Christmas Problem” - When Santa Claus is in trouble, Peg and Cat have to solve their biggest problem ever: how to make and wrap presents for all the children of the world, and then deliver them using 100 sleighs.

“The Penguin Problem” - Peg and Cat coach a team of skiing penguins, who would have a shot at the Olympic gold medal if only they knew “over,” “under,” and “in between.”

DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD
Daniel’s Winter Adventure/Neighborhood Nutcracker” – premieres December 17
Daniel’s Winter Adventure” - Daniel, Dad, Prince Wednesday and Prince Tuesday are all going sledding! But once they get to the hill and see how tall it is, Daniel and Prince Wednesday get scared. Dad assures them that if they try it a little bit at a time, they might surprise themselves and have a great time. Later, Daniel ice-skates for the first time. When he tries it a little bit at a time, he realizes it is not so hard.

“Neighborhood Nutcracker” - Daniel is going to see a show called The Nutcracker Ballet! Once he arrives at the performance, he finds out that Prince Wednesday is sick and needs Daniel to fill in for him and dance on stage. Daniel is reluctant at first, but realizes that if he learns the steps a little bit at a time, he can dance the Nutcracker and the show will go on! Strategy: If something seems hard to do, try it a little bit at a time.

THOMAS & FRIENDS
“Christmas Cheer” – premieres December 17
“Duncan The Humbug” - Everyone is happy at Christmastime except Duncan, the Scottish narrow gauge engine, who seems to be grumbling even more than usual. Victor offers Duncan a new coat of paint if he can refrain from grumbling for one whole day. Duncan rises to the challenge, but it is not so easy for an engine who likes to grumble to give up a lifetime habit.

“The Perfect Gift” - The whole island is celebrating Christmas and there are decorations everywhere.  But it doesn't look very Christmas-y at the scrap yard. Percy starts to worry that Reg is missing out and he tries to find something to give Reg to cheer him up. But Reg only seems happy about scrap. Percy discovers that Reg is celebrating Christmas in his own way and has been making decorations from the scrap.

“Coming Home for Christmas” – premieres December 18
“Last Train for Christmas” - It’s Christmas Eve and a lot of passengers are coming home to Sodor for the holiday. Connor can’t carry all the passengers who are trying to get on his train. He promises to come back and pick them up, but the snow keeps falling and the engines are struggling to keep the tracks clear. It becomes a race against time, and the engines have to work together to clear the tracks and get the passengers home in time for Christmas.

“Long Lost Friend” - Gator returns to the Island of Sodor after being away for a long time. He is looking forward to seeing his old friend Percy. When Percy hears that Gator is back, he is very excited and immediately heads off to see him. But the two engines keep missing each other. They both have doubts they’ll see each other, but finally they connect and have a wonderful reunion.

But is the legend real? George and Allie are determined to find out by taking a picture of No Noggin in hat-kicking action. But first, George needs to figure out what he’s going to be for Halloween so he can win the costume contest at the town Boo Festival and give the prize to the Man with the Yellow Hat. Will George be able to put together the perfect costume and find out the truth about No Noggin? Only the curious will find out!

New Season 9 CURIOUS GEORGE Episodes Descriptions and Listings

“Submonkey/Double-Oh-Monkey Tracks Trouble”
Premieres Tuesday, October 28
“Submonkey” - When Professor Pizza’s birthday present is dragged away by a strong ocean current, George volunteers to take an undersea adventure in a monkey-sized submarine to retrieve it. Can the curious little monkey locate a small package at the bottom of the ocean or will Pizza’s present be forever lost at sea?

“Double-Oh-Monkey Tracks Trouble” - Double-Oh-Monkey takes on his most important case yet – to prevent Steve’s well-intentioned (but always disastrous) “good luck present” from ruining Betsy’s dance recital! Using his super spy skills and all five of his senses, George tracks down Steve and discovers…a bucket of wet paint?! Can George warn Betsy in time? Or will her dance recital get a splash of color?

“Monkey Goes Batty/Curious George and the Balloon Hound”
Premieres Wednesday, October 29
“Monkey Goes Batty” - A hole in the roof means George and the Man with the Yellow Hat must sleep in the living room while their bedrooms are being repaired. But their adventure quickly turns into a disaster when George’s nightly trips to the kitchen keep the Man with the Yellow Hat awake at night. Can George figure out a way to quietly find his way to the refrigerator in the dark?

“Curious George and the Balloon Hound” - George and Hundley are amazed by all the flying machines at the museum’s aviation exhibit. So when Hundley’s souvenir airship flies out of reach in the lobby, he dreams he is British flying ace, Leftenant Doxie. Joined by the daring flyboy Chuck Monkey, the dynamic duo uses propeller power as they race towards the finish line. When Hundley awakens from his dream, he has a few new ideas on how to get his ceiling-bound toy within reach.

“George’s Photo Finish/Monkey Mystery Gift”
Premieres Thursday, October 30
“George’s Photo Finish” - Today is the big unveiling of the Ankylosaurus dinosaur skeleton at the museum, but it’s missing a leg! George and the Man with the Yellow Hat thought they delivered all four bones. Where did the fourth bone go? Fortunately, Mr. Quint took pictures on their way to the museum. Maybe the photos can lead them to the bone…if they can only figure out which order to put them in.

“Monkey Mystery Gift” - George and Allie’s imaginations run wild as they brainstorm what could be in the large unmarked box on George’s doorstep. Based on its weight, sound, smell and bristly hair, they’re certain it’s a baby goat! But what’s really inside surprises them more than anything they could ever have imagined.

PBS Kids is releasing "Arthur Makes A Movie" on DVD on May 13, 2014. The DVD is approximately 50 minutes and will retail for just $9.99. Not only will the DVD feature 4 adventures, but will also include printable coloring pages and activities.

The 4 Adventures Included are:

Arthur Makes a Movie
Too young to see a real “James Hound” movie, the kids decide they’ll make a film of their own.  With Muffy directing and Arthur playing the dashing, urbane hero, how bad could it be? Hmmm—don’t answer that.

Go To Your Room, D.W.
Poor D.W.  How would you like to be four years old and completely misunderstood by your parents?  And then be sent to your room for 10 whole minutes??  The indignity of it all!!  Those long, dragging minutes give D.W. a chance to relive her tragic childhood and plan a fool-proof means of escape.

Agent of Change
The latest animated hit in movie theaters about a boy and his truck has left Muffy and Francine disappointed.  Why don’t there seem to be any cool female characters on screen?  So with the help of a very talented artist, Molly, the “Group of Three” set out to make their own movie!

D.W. Unties the Knot
After watching “The Wedding Channel,” D.W. wants to get married!  And, having no idea what this really means, she starts planning herself the biggest unicorn wedding imaginable.  But D.W. soon realizes that she’s getting more than she bargained for.  Can she back out in time?

Also, be sure to check out pbskids.org/daniel in February when a new Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood game, “Let’s Make Believe,” launches! In this game, children make choices for Daniel’s make-believe play, finding encouragement for their own imaginative ideas and building creative thinking, visualizing and problem-solving skills.

“Daniel’s Big Feelings Week” – Episode Air Dates and Descriptions

“Duckling Goes Home/Daniel Feels Left Out” (#135) – Premieres February 17, 2014
“Duckling Goes Home”: Today at school, the children find out that Ducky has grown too big to be their classroom pet and it’s time to take him back to the farm. This news is very upsetting, especially to Daniel and Miss Elaina. The children cope with their sadness in different ways and soon they feel a little bit better.

“Daniel Feels Left Out”: On their way home from the Neighborhood grocery store, Dad and Daniel stop by the Treehouse to say “hello.” O the Owl and Katerina Kittycat have been playing together all day, and are even going to have dinner together. When it is time to go home with Dad, Daniel feels left out and sad. Back at home, Mom and Dad Tiger help Daniel with his sad feelings and he soon starts to feel better.

Strategy: It’s ok to feel sad sometimes; little by little you'll feel better.

“Daniel Gets Frustrated/Frustration at School” (#136) – Premieres February 18, 2014
“Daniel Gets Frustrated”: Daniel is staying at home with Mom Tiger today. He really wants to play with Prince Wednesday, but the prince is visiting his cousin Chrissie. He asks Mom if they can go to Music Man Stan’s shop, but they can't because it is closed. Daniel gets really frustrated when it seems that he’s unable to do anything he wants to do. With some guidance from Mom, Daniel learns how to work through his frustration.

“Frustration at School”: Daniel and his friends are playing “restaurant” at school and Daniel feels frustrated when he can’t find the toy he is looking for. Teacher Harriet helps him realize that the right thing to do is to take a step back and ask for help.

Strategy: When you’re frustrated, take a step back and ask for help.

“Daniel Is Jealous/Jealousy at the Treehouse” (#138) – Premieres February 19, 2014
“Daniel Is Jealous”: Daniel and Katerina are playing “airplane” with Grandpere. Daniel thinks Katerina is getting too much attention from Grandpere and starts to feel jealous. Daniel explains his feelings and is reassured that he is Grandpere’s one and only Daniel.

“Jealousy at the Treehouse”: Daniel and Katerina are at O the Owl’s house today, playing with his new science kit. Daniel and Katerina feel jealous of O because they want science tools just like his. After talking about their feelings, the children realize how they can all enjoy O’s special science kit.

Strategy: When you feel jealous, talk about it.

“Someone Else’s Feelings/Empathy at School” (#140) – Premieres February 20, 2014
“Someone Else’s Feelings”: Daniel and O the Owl are pretending to be handymen, using their toy tools to make “repairs” to Daniel’s playhouse. Daniel is having lots of fun hammering loudly, but it’s upsetting O, who would rather do something quieter. Daniel loves hammering so much that it’s hard for him to see why it upsets O. Mom helps Daniel be empathetic and think about how O is feeling: Daniel remembers a time when he was upset because Miss Elaina was being way too loud for him. He doesn’t want O to feel this way, and he realizes that they can both have fun as quiet handymen!

“Empathy at School”: Chrissie and Daniel are playing together at school today, but when Chrissie loses her special bracelet, she doesn’t feel like playing anymore. Daniel has trouble understanding why, until Teacher Harriet shows him how to be empathetic and think about how Chrissie may be feeling. Daniel remembers just how worried he was when he thought he had lost Tigey and decides to stop playing and help find the bracelet.

This February, PBS KIDS will feature a special week of the top-rated DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, with the debut of five new episodes that focus on the big emotions that young children experience. In “Daniel’s Big Feelings Week,” which airs from February 17 to 21, Daniel Tiger and his friends will help children and families learn strategies for dealing with feelings of jealousy, disappointment, frustration and empathy. Episodes from “Daniel’s Big Feelings Week” will be available on DVD starting February 25, when the first DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD DVDs, “Daniel’s Big Feelings” and “Life’s Little Lessons,” will be released wherever DVDs are sold.

A new DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD game, “Let’s Make Believe,” launches on pbskids.org/daniel in February. “DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD helps our youngest viewers build the skills that research shows are critical for success in school and in life,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Programming, PBS. “With ‘Daniel’s Big Feelings Week,’ we are excited to offer families new strategies to help them deal with challenging emotions that arise in the life of any preschooler – from how to cope with feeling sad or left out to managing frustration. Other episodes of the popular series throughout the week will help children learn important concepts like empathy and understanding differences between people.”

“Fred Rogers understood that it is vital for young children to develop positive emotional and social skills, and the five new episodes in ‘Daniel’s Big Feelings Week’ bring his gentle lessons to today’s preschool viewers in a fun and memorable way,” said Paul Siefken, Vice President, Broadcast and Digital Media, The Fred Rogers Company. “The new stories will help further Fred’s enduring legacy with both parents and children, and we are excited to introduce this week of special shows for Daniel fans of all ages.”

Angela C. Santomero, Series Creator and Co-Executive Producer, added, “In ‘Daniel’s Big Feelings Week,’ and in every episode, Daniel brings young viewers directly into his world so that they can learn right alongside him and his friends as they navigate life from a preschool perspective. The catchy musical strategies that are an integral part of each story stick with kids and parents and continue to support them long after the episode is over.”

DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, which debuted on PBS KIDS in September 2012, is the first television series produced by The Fred Rogers Company since the iconic MISTER ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD. Every episode of the well-loved show features two endearing stories starring four-year-old Daniel Tiger and his best friends, who invite young viewers to come with them on fun adventures as they explore the colorful Neighborhood of Make-Believe. Series creator Angela C. Santomero (SUPER WHY, Blue’s Clues), from lead production partner Out of the Blue Enterprises, is co-executive producer of the show, along with Kevin Morrison of The Fred Rogers Company and Vince Commisso of the award-winning animation studio 9 Story Entertainment.

Television Critics Association Press Tour, Pasadena, CA, January 21, 2014Today PBS KIDS announced the production of its newest series: ODD SQUAD, a live-action media property designed to help kids ages 5-8 learn math. The show focuses on two young agents, Olive and Otto, who are part of the Odd Squad, an agency whose mission is to save the day whenever something unusual happens in their town. A math concept is embedded in each of their cases, as Olive and Otto work together to problem-solve and correct the oddity du jour in each episode.

Coming soon to PBS KIDS on-air, online and on mobile, ODD SQUAD is created by Tim McKeon (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Adventure Time, The Electric Company) and Adam Peltzman (The Electric Company, The Backyardigans, Wallykazam!) and produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment and The Fred Rogers Company. ODD SQUAD is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education through the Ready To Learn Initiative, a program that supports the development of innovative educational television and digital media targeted to preschool and early elementary school children and their families, and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

“Research shows that children who have positive, enriching experiences with math learning at a young age will have greater long-term success,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Programming, PBS. “These early math experiences are especially important for kids from low-income families, who typically start school with lower scores in math than their middle-income peers. Grounded in a standards-based math framework, ODD SQUAD is designed to help children build these critical math skills and skills such as problem-solving, resilience and collaboration, to help them establish a solid foundation for success in school and in life.”

Each episode of ODD SQUAD includes two 11-minute cases in which the agents investigate weird and unusual phenomena around them and use math to put things right. From recapturing a gallon-sized blob that has separated into smaller pieces, to dealing with a slew of unicorns, dinosaurs and wizards that have escaped from books, there is no occurrence that is too strange for the Odd Squad as they face off against various villains that wreak havoc around town.

From time to time, Olive and Otto are overwhelmed with information and need to work out a problem, at which point they teleport to the futuristic “Mathroom,” where they have all the tools they need to work toward a solution. In each adventure, the Odd Squad agents navigate a complicated underground system of giant tubes that allow them to travel to and from headquarters in just seconds. Each case is followed by an interstitial, such as an agent training video, a guide to the Odd Squad headquarters or demonstrations of how to use the Odd Squad’s odd gadgets – from the “Pudding-Inator” to “The Make-Anything-Within-Reason-Machine.”

The ODD SQUAD television series is part of a multiplatform media experience that will include free interactive content online and on mobile. ODD SQUAD’s digital content will put kids in the driver’s seat, giving them the opportunity to sign up and join the Odd Squad, solve cases and stop oddness, just like Olive and Otto. The show’s interactive features will include games, parent resources, mobile apps and more.

ODD SQUAD will invite viewers to take an active role in learning, as they get wrapped up in the unusual cases on-air and then have the chance to become Odd Squad agents themselves through digital content,” said Paul Siefken, Vice President, Broadcast and Digital Media, The Fred Rogers Company. “At the Fred Rogers Company, we are excited to work with such extraordinary talent on this uncommonly creative series that bolsters our mission to produce high-quality educational media for children.”

ODD SQUAD is part of PBS KIDS’ ongoing commitment to use the power of media to help open up worlds of possibilities for children. PBS KIDS serves young audiences wherever they live, learn and play — through educational apps, on TV, online and in the classroom.
