Have a list go step by step and stick to your list.
Preparing for it beforehand...Try to buy as much stuff throughout the year like clearance items so that when it comes time for christmas you just might need to buy only a few things here and there as filler
make lists and follow them
Am I a Doer? Please, I make my bed before I even get up :)
Christmas is always on the 25th of December, they don't change it on a whim, so 364 days ~should~ be ample time. But I am as guilty as anyone of procrastinating (gives me something to complain about). I keep a for-this-purpose-only folder on my computer where I save ideas for possible gift buying sites, DIY projects (as though I ever have time to create my own wreath out of toilet paper rolls!), and recipes to bring for holiday suppers.
Also, though more shopping does not sound appealing, go shopping soon after Christmas this year to get well priced decorations and gift wrap for next year.
I try to get ahead of the game - and pre-handle (get done) everything I can ahead of time. I make lists (and check/revise them not just twice but as the situation changes.) and finally if (as is inevitable) some things go wrong, I try to keep an upbeat attitude and remember this:
The worst that can happen is somethings will go wrong and if they do - look at the bright side: you'll have great stories to tell later! (If everything was perfect - what you you have to talk about? I mean really - think about it!

My tip is divide and conquer and start early.
Make a checklist!
